J is for...

JAPAN: None of our thousands of photos can properly capture the appeal. Even though my academic training was in Chinese art, I was determined to pick a dissertation topic involving Chinese paintings in Japan. My first visit was the Fall of 1969, I lived in Tokyo in 1972, started Asiatica in 1976 and have been trying to bring the aesthetics of Japan to Kansas City ever since. Art, Architecture, gardens, photography, food, clothing, publishing and myriad other deeply embedded traditions there have inspired me deeply.

JEWELRY: As ever, jewelry is in a category of possessions which I love.   But only one-of-a-kind (or nearly so), old or new in functional forms, possibly to be worn in combinations and made by a real person. My gold bangles are with me daily.

JORDAN (Gomez): Beekeeper, expert sewing technician, beauty, mother and inventor of our unique "kintsugi" technique.

JONI: Our wonderful, faithful and long-time model who makes our clothing look as comfortable, adaptable and timeless as it is.
