I IS FOR:

INDIGO: Durable, eternally classic, the real indigenous dye of Japan and a mainstay of our collections over many decades.  Usually linen or cotton in various shades and patterns or just plain.

IKAT: The most insanely complex way to add pattern to a fabric.  Warp or weft threads or both (double-ikat) are protected from dye in a predetermined way and the protected areas (resisted areas) coincide to make a pattern, often with a slightly blurred edge. When I have tried to describe the process I see eyes glaze over before I have even finished the description.

IMAGINATION: So many imaginations have been used on our clothing.  First, that of  the original designer of the textile, then the choice of fabric(s) to be used for each garment, then how to cut, or combine the fabric for the cutting of the garment, and last the sewing and finishing. Imaginative decision-making at every point.

INVENTION: We came to the idea of re-cycling rare Japanese fabrics over 4 decades ago. How to invent a new way of using something discarded or dis-regarded in its original form. 

INVENTORY: How to account for what is on hand.  We have a huge inventory of fabrics which will still be here after we are done awaiting new ideas.

INDIA: The most transforming travel experience we have had.  The most beautiful people of all sorts wearing the most gorgeous colors and somehow making sense of what seems like chaos at first.  A deep and meaningful culture resonating on so many levels.  Leaving India and arriving in Japan makes one long for the dis-order, color and vitality of India against the quiet orderliness and visible rules of the Japanese monoculture.

INDEPENDENCE: Be as independent as you can.  Learn to do everything and then delegate if necessary.  Iconoclasm helps.

ITALY: The cradle of culture.  Ready to go there anytime.
